On January 1, 1975 the Experimental Pastoral Area of Gateshead was established, a daughter community of the Charlestown Parish. There were at that time 3 centres: St Paul’s Gateshead, St Mark’s Windale, and St George’s Mt Hutton. The decision was made (under the leadership of Archdeacon Moxon, 1974-5) to bring the 3 centres together as one. He consulted with the Housing Commission regarding the provision of the current blocks of land.
St Paul’s Gateshead celebrated its last service on February 12 1978.
St George’s Mt Hutton closed for worship on March 18 1979.
St Mark’s Windale held its on Feb 2 1980.
St Mark’s was subsequently moved to the present site, and is now our Parish Hall.
In the interim worship was held in the Rectory or the Hall.
The new ‘Church of the Transfiguration’ was dedicated on August 8, 1980
The day we celebrated the Feast of the Transfiguration.
The change in worship centre was later reflected in a change of name. In Feb 1986 we became the Provisional District of Windale (Provisional District status had been conferred some time earlier).
It was with much joy that on June 3 1995, the Diocesan Synod agreed to constitute the Parish of Windale.
